How Accessories Can Make An Outfit Complete

My husband did the coolest thing for me during the first twenty four days of December.  He made an advent box with twenty four boxes and in each was a piece of jewellery.  There were earrings, bracelets and necklaces.  Of course, they weren't expensive pieces because we can't afford that but the sentiment was very much appreciated.

It got me thinking about where I would wear them most importantly, what outfits they would match.  Around the same time I was given the opportunity by Ioanna at Anassa Boutique to try out a piece of handmade jewellery for a blog post.

When I'm thinking of how accessories can make an outfit complete, I always come back to my outfit for Christmas Day in 2009.  I had a gorgeous electric blue dress with black glitter flowers on it.  I'd seen an identical dress worn on a woman a few weeks before and although the dress was beautiful, she wasn't making the most of it.  Her hair and make-up were immaculate but there were no accessories.  I knew exactly what I had to do to make the best of that dress; patterned stockings, hair jewels and a necklace similar to the pattern on the dress.

Sometimes it happens the other way round.  You have a piece of jewellery that you need to match to clothing and teaming it with the wrong ensemble will not make the best of either the clothing or the jewellery.  For example, when I tried to match the blue and silver necklace to a black and silver dress, thinking the colours would go well together, it was a disaster, as you can see.

Then I tried it with a white chunky knit sweater and again, it didn't look right.  The casual top looked a little strange with a glitzy piece of jewellery like the one I was sent.  I think the one thing that's important is that the occasion matches the accessories.  There's no use wearing bling if you're just doing the school run, is there?

I then tried it with one of my favourite blue cocktail dresses and it was a perfect match.  The blue in the pearls matched the shade of the dress and the silver was a perfect contrast.  I can't wait to wear this now, so much that I'm desperate for an excuse to go out.  I missed out on wearing it for Hogmanay and I don't want to wait until Valentine's Day.  It's too perfect a match!

  2. It really is a pretty necklace. The blue in the pearls against the silver makes for a lovely contrast. Great piece of jewellery, I'd wear it!
